Winfried Bönig

Winfried Bönig was appointed cathedral organist in Cologne in 2001 and, as professor for organ and improvisation, has been the head of the “Catholic Church Music” department at the Cologne University of Music and Dance since 1998.
He studied organ with Prof. Franz Lehrndorfer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, where he graduated with a master class diploma. He then studied musicology, history and music education at the University of Augsburg.
From 1984 to 1998 he was church musician at St. Josef’s in Memmingen. In 1995 he was awarded the Culture Prize of the City of Memmingen for his musical work. Concert invitations take him all over the world year after year.
Bönig was and is the interpreter of numerous world premieres of works dedicated to him by composers such as Enjott Schneider, Jean Guillou, Naji Hakim, Stephen Tharp, Colin Mawby, Robert HP Platz and Daniel Roth. Numerous recordings – as organist and conductor – now add up to a long discography of the most diverse repertoire.
